9 things you probably forgot about Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman’s relationship

On Monday, February 5th, Sarah Silverman announced her breakup with Michael Sheen on Twitter. And of course, even with sad news to report, she managed to make us laugh. “The great @michaelsheen & I consciously uncoupled over Christmas,” Silverman tweeted. “I mean, not ‘over Christmas’ – like that wasn’t the fight that ended it. No fight. We just live in different countries & it got hard. Felt we should just tell y’all so u stop askin, ‘How’s Michael/How’s Sarah?’”

Silverman and Sheen had been together since early 2014. Before that, she dated other celebrities and comedians, too, including comedian Dave Attell and TV writer Alec Sulkin. But nothing was more high-profile than the nearly seven-year relationship between Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman.

Together, Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman ruled the aughts, when they were Hollywood’s funniest couple. But the pair parted ways almost a decade ago, meaning there are probably things that you forgot about their relationship (like how they met and if they ever got married). To refresh your memory, here are 9 things you probably don’t remember about the time that Kimmel and Silverman spent together. Plenty of hilarious quotes ahead.

1Sarah Silverman says they first met in 2001.

“We first met at the Hugh Hefner Friars Club Roast [in 2001],” she told PEOPLE. “Jimmy was the host and I was a roaster. He said I was a slut and I called him fat and charisma-less.”

2But Jimmy Kimmel says it was earlier than that.

“Sarah thinks we met at the Hugh Hefner roast, but the truth is we met at a party years before that,” he told PEOPLE. “Obviously, I didn’t make much of an impression.” Oh, you two.

3Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman began dating in 2002.

And they quickly became Hollywood’s funniest couple.

4They were on and off again until 2009.

Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman first split in July of 2008 but reconciled that October. They broke up again for good in March of 2009.

5But they never married.

Before dating Silverman, Kimmel was married to Gina Maddy from 1988 to 2002. They had two children. He married Molly McNearney in 2013 and had two more kids. But Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman never tied the knot.

6They got along well with each other’s parents.

“I was really nervous. But really soon after meeting them I was comfortable putting my head on his mom’s lap, and his dad was comfortable releasing THE MOST TOXIC gas around me,” Silverman joked to PEOPLE.

“Sarah has two sets of parents,” Kimmel added. “To break the ice, I handed each of them a SkyMall catalog and an envelope stuffed with $100 bills. I told them to go crazy. Once the foot massagers and remote grill thermometers started rolling in, they liked me a lot.”

7Kimmel inspired the title of her 2005 movie “Jesus is Magic.”

Silverman, who is Jewish, reportedly said that Kimmel, who is Catholic, believes that “Jesus is Magic.”

8Silverman made “I’m F*@#ing Matt Damon” while they were still together in 2009.

The parody music video, which she surprised her beau with on Jimmy Kimmel Live, helped fuel the ongoing “feud” between Jimmy Kimmel and Matt Damon.

9Even though their relationship is over, Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman remain good friends.

She’s even appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live a few times since their breakup. And it’s clear that the two comedians have nothing but love for each other. We’re glad they were able to stay friends.
