So, apparently people REALLY want to see the new Zoolander movie
Hang on to your fashion-forward fedoras, Zoolander fans, the trailer for the sequel is out, and it’s blowing everyone away. As befitting the world’s most famous male model, Derek Zoolander, the trailer for Zoolander 2 has knocked previous title-holder Dumb and Dumber To off the runway to become the most-viewed comedy trailer ever with more than 52 million views.
Let’s pause and admire that number for just a second. 52 million views? That’s the more than the population of South Korea! It’s as many people as the populations of Australia, Hungary, and Belgium- combined! If every single person, babies and my mother included, in California and Pennsylvania watched the trailer, they’d still have to tell 400,00o other people to watch it to reach that number. Okay, we’re nerding out a bit with the numbers, but that’s a LOT of views.
And why on Earth not? The trailer, despite an appearance by the controversial trans character played by Benedict Cumberbatch, a portrayal that has upset a lot of people, is pretty darn hilarious. Poor Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) and his former rival Hansel, played by Owen Wilson, are now washed up and ridiculed in the modeling world. When someone starts killing off the world’s most beautiful people, however (apparently starting with Justin Bieber, who takes a hilariously attractive death-selfie) they are called in to do undercover work by Interpol.
The cast is a comedy hall-of-fame, basically, with Will Ferrell reprising his role as evil mastermind/fashion mogul Jacobim Mugatu, and appearances by Fred Armisen, Olivia Munn, and Kristin Wiig (who is clearly channeling an even-creepier Effie Trinket). It’s theoretically possible to make a bad film with this level of talent, but we’re going to go out on a limb and say it’s extremely unlikely, especially with a writing team composed of humor-greats Ben Stiller, Justin Theroux, John Hamburg, and Nicholas Stoller.
Why does February have to be so far away? We can’t wait for Blue Steel much longer! If you’d like to push the record-breaking views even higher, check out the trailer below!
