Zooey Deschanel tells Ellen why she named her daughter Elsie Otter
Of course our queen Zooey Deschanel would have a cute and quirky name for her daughter, but even we could never have predicted the name Elsie Otter. Neither could Ellen, so Zooey explained her reasoning when she stopped by the show on Thursday afternoon.
“Is that a family name?” Ellen joked.
“In the sense that we’re all mammals,” Zooey replied. But her reasoning actually makes a lot of sense. “We thought Elsie is kind of a classic name, like a lot of people have grandmas and aunts names Elsie…we were like the middle name can be a little wild.”
And it definitely is wild — in every sense of the word.
“We love otters because they’re so cute and playful and fun, and they’re really smart,” Zooey continued.
The more she explained, the more we kind of want to name our own kids after these adorable creatures. Plus, Zooey says, if there are other parents with children named Otter, they can totally be best friends. Isn’t that reason enough?
