Zendaya calls out Photoshopping in the best way possible
If there’s one thing we’ve learned by now, it’s that Zendaya is fearless (and on point) when it comes to calling out problematic messages. The nineteen-year-old Disney star slash Internet hero has always been one to set things straight—from shutting down Twitter trolls and casual racism to putting the kibosh on sexism.
Last night, she reminded us again why she’s a total role model, when she took to Instagram to call out some Photoshop shenanigans that went down on her latest shoot for Modeliste Magazine.
After the shoot came out, Zendaya noticed something a little off about her photos. What happened to her hips? Why was her waist so small? She prides herself on being honest with her fans and empowering them to love their lovely selves. Unfortunately, these retouched photos sent the wrong message, so Zendaya took action.
Not only did Zendaya call out the retouching number done on her images, she explained why these kinds of practices are so problematic. “These are the things that make women self-conscious,” she explains. “That create the unrealistic ideals of beauty that we have.” Plus, as you can see in the before and after pics posted above, she looks a hundred times better “au natural” than she does with her body parts manipulated.
Thankfully, Modeliste heard Zendaya loud and clear. According to Zendaya, they pulled down all the retouched pictures after she raised the red flag. All in a day’s work for our girl.
Zendaya is making change in the modeling industry one Instagram at a time, and she’s doing it with the beautiful body she was born with. Rock on.
