Zendaya just flawlessly defined feminism for us
Every time we think we’ve reached peak loving Zendaya, she does something so wonderful she makes us realize, that yes, we CAN love her more, when it comes to this celeb, our hearts have no bottom. This is a girl who says the things we all need to hear. Be she defending her parents from trolls or shutting down ageism or dropping truth bombs about beauty, she is basically a 24/7 fountain of wisdom. Slay, lady, slay.
Zendaya recently stepped up to the plate again to speak beautifully on the subject of gender equality. Our girl is the cover star for the December 2015 issue of Flare magazine, and in the issue’s profile of the star, she took a moment to share with her interviewer her personal definition of a feminist.
“A feminist is a person who believes in the power of women just as much as they believe in the power of anyone else. It’s equality, it’s fairness, and I think it’s a great thing to be a part of.”
Yes, yes, yes, and more yes. Zendaya’s definition cuts to the heart of what’s wonderful about feminism, it’s about making sure things are fair and equal for everyone on the gender spectrum. And she’s right, it IS a great movement to be a part of, it’s a beautiful thing to want to make the world a better place for everyone.
Zendaya also spoke in the interview about how the reason she changes up her look so much on the red carpet is because she’s trying to do her part to expand the definitions of what it means to be glamorous and beautiful.
“A big reason I play with beauty and hair is that it’s important to show different kinds of beauty when I’m on the red carpet. I don’t want to be just one-dimensional or relatable to one type of person. I want a different woman to be like, That’s like me! That’s like my hair! or That’s so my style! If I went out there and was just like, pretty, all the time, doing the same thing, it can be cool, but you’re also catering to one type of person, and what about all those other kinds of beautiful out there?”
Zendaya knows she’s a role model and she takes her status seriously.
“In the words of Tupac Shakur: I am a real model because I’m not playing a role and I’m not pretending to be some good kid that’s perfect,” she says. “It just happens that I’m a good kid, and I don’t do bad stuff and I like to be positive because that’s just how I was raised. I think if I were faking it, then you would’ve seen me break character a long time ago.”
The Flare profile is well-worth a read, go check it out over here. In the meantime, we’ll just be waiting over here for our next Zendaya wisdom-fix. Because they’re SO GOOD and SO NECESSARY.
