Zelda Williams speaks out about losing her father, Robin Williams, in an emotional, beautiful tribute
A little more than six months ago, Robin Williams — father, husband, beloved actor, vibrant comedian, lively storyteller, and notoriously kind and wonderful human being — committed suicide in his home in Marin County, California, and the world over is still mourning the loss. In her first interview since her father’s death, Zelda Williams spoke with the Today Show earlier this morning about how she’s coping with her grief; and what she had to say was as beautiful as it was inspiring.
“There’s no point questioning it and no point blaming anyone for it and there’s no point blaming yourself or the world or whatever the case may be,” she told NBC’s Kate Snow, “because it happened and you have to continue to move and you have to continue to live and manage.”
The actress and all-around smart, wonderful lady has been through a lot in the past few months (including some absolutely inexcusable online harassment), but she continues to move forward and rise above with grace. Rather than dwell on the circumstances surrounding her father’s death, Williams is focused on honoring his life, particularly his expansive work for various charities. This Friday, she’ll even be presenting a “Noble Award” in his honor.
“He’s done charity as long as he had the wherewithal and the ability to do it,” she said, “That was what his favorite thing other than comedy really was.”
Williams had a lot to say about how we deal with such incredible loss, and her words serve as a beautiful comfort for anyone who has ever mourned a loved one.
“It’s going to take a lot of work to allow myself to have the sort of fun, happy life that I had, but that’s important,” she said, “Anybody who has ever lost anyone works very hard to continue that memory in a positive way.”
To honor and remember her father in her everyday life, Williams got a tattoo of a hummingbird on her hand.
“Hummingbirds are fun and flighty and strange,” she said, “it’s hard to keep them in one place, and dad was a bit like that.”
