Here’s what we know about Zayn Malik’s solo album
Since Zayn Malik’s parting from One Direction (what sweet sorrow), we’ve been getting sent mixed signals about his first solo album. His friend and producer, Naughty Boy, leaked a demo from the album back in March called “I Won’t Mind,” which was a stripped down, acoustic love song, not too far from what he used to sing with the band. Unfortunately, after major backlash from fans, the track got taken down pretty quickly.
Then, a few weeks ago, Mic Righteous confused everyone by releasing a cover, “No Type,” he made with Zayn, only to remove it within hours, too. Gah! So frustrating. He and Naughty Boy publicly fought over Twitter about the song, because apparently the track wasn’t finished. The rapper also claimed on Facebook that he leaked the single because Zayn is forbidden by his record company to put out new music for at least two years after leaving 1D. This still hasn’t been confirmed, and we’re still crossing our fingers that it’s not true.
“No Type” was really different from what fans are used to hearing Zayn sing, especially because of the song’s explicit lyrics. This leads us to wonder what kind of tone his solo album will take.
In a recent interview with Capital FM, Naughty Boy called Zayn’s record “soulful,” and promised that it will be “worth the wait.” Soulful, huh? That sounds intriguing. Though there’s no news on when we will finally get to have Zayn’s music for keeps, the producer dropped some hints about what we can expect from the album when it (finally) comes out.
“He’s writing, himself, on it as well,” Naughty Boy said. That’s awesome – maybe this music will reveal Zayn’s deepest, darkest secrets, like why he left One Direction, really (no, like really, really). “I think it’ll all make sense soon,” the producer added. “Zayn’s his own man, no one can tell Zayn what to do, especially me!”
Naughty Boy also talked about how impressed he is by Zayn’s talent. “He’s got an amazing voice but I do feel like they all [One Direction] have added something as individuals in that band,” he said. “Zayn has just been probably the one that’s sort of not fully showcased what he’s capable of.” The UK-based producer added that he thinks Zayn’s voice is “amazing,” and that, “he’s an artist.” This solo album is sounding better and better!
