Super fangirling over Zadie Smith’s next project
We love Zadie Smith, like L-O-V-E Zadie Smith. Have we mentioned we love Zadie Smith? Well in really exciting film news, word broke yesterday of an incredible sounding project that brings together one of our very favorite writers (Zadie Smith) and outer space. So far we don’t know much about the upcoming film, but what we do know has us super excited.
Zadie Smith, author of books White Teeth and On Beauty and NW, is teaming up with French director Claire Denis to make an as-yet-untitled film. It’s going to be an “adventure sci-fi” set “beyond the solar system in a ‘future that seems like the present,’” according to Screen Daily. It is also, allegedly, based on a short Denis made called Contact. Looks pretty exciting to us!
“I am delighted that Claire has been tempted to cross the channel and make a film in English,” producer Oliver Dungey told Screen Daily. “She is one of the greats of contemporary cinema and she’s assembled a quite extraordinary team to make exactly the kind of ambitious film that audiences cherish – completely original, genuinely pushing the boundaries of art and science and, above all, extremely entertaining.”
The project will be Denis’ first English language film, and writing duties will be shared between Denis, Smith, and Smith’s husband Nick Laird. Little is known about how Smith became involved, but we’re so excited that she did. Other people tied to the project are Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, astrophysicist Aurélien Barrau, and indie musician Stuart Staples. It’s a pretty incredible and diverse list of people having a hand in development!
The film is expected to start shooting later this year or early next year.
