Zac Efron revealed he once made Michael Jackson cry

We love hearing about moments when celebrities who idolize each other get a chance to collaborate, meet up, or simply chat on the phone. While appearing on The Graham Norton Show, Zac Efron said he made Michael Jackson cry while on the phone, and admitted he shed a few tears himself during the chat with the legendary musician.

Jackson passed away in June of 2009. While Efron got into the business back in 2002, his career started to flourish after the release of High School Musical, which came out in 2006. The made-for-television movie, which also starred celebrities like Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale, was incredibly successful, and two sequels were released soon after the original.

All three films were directed by Kenny Ortega, who also directed the Disney Channel movie Descendants 2 along with a dozen episodes of Gilmore Girls. Efron obviously spent some time with Ortega, as he was the link who connected him with Jackson during an event that happened off-set. According to Efron, it was probably around the time when he was in Paris promoting High School Musical 3 — and he was around 20 or 21 years old.

While enjoying dinner together, Ortega got a call from Jackson and had a brief chat with him while Efron was nearby. Ortega put Efron on the phone with Jackson, who seemed a little confused about who he was.

Efron admitted that he was at a loss for words during the initial call.

"He hands me the phone and I'm like...'Um, hello?' and I hear 'Hi, who's this?'" Efron said.

Still, he got to tell Jackson that he was his hero.

Efron joked about the fact that Jackson seemed eager to get back on the phone with Ortega. However, the singer ended up calling right back when he realized that it was Efron on the other line. It turns out that Jackson was a big fan of his work.

"I lost it. I just lost it. I lost my balance, I think I fell over into the wall... I just started crying," Efron said. "I was a mess. Literally, I was just making a fool out of myself."

And, well, Efron’s kind words to Jackson about how he was an inspiration made Jackson tear up as well. The two cried on the phone together, with Jackson ending the call saying, “Dreams really do come true, don’t they?”

We couldn’t love this story more, and we think it’s amazing that Zac Efron had the chance to tell his idol how much he’s learned from him. Sharing happy tears together must have been such a big moment for them both.
