You’re going to want to copy the hair and makeup from Chanel’s latest runway show
Channeling an earlier era of space exploration, Chanel’s Paris Fashion Week hair and makeup called upon 1960s beauty trends, and added a new-age twist. Sending models-of-the-moment Kendall Jenner and Gigi and Bella Hadid down the runway in back-combed, bouffant hairstyles and severe-yet-mod makeup, the overall effect was retro, but perfect for today’s adventurous beauty climate.
The show — titled “Ground Control” — was space exploration-themed, and saw models orbiting around a Chanel-branded rocket ship in the center of the runway wearing astronaut prints and garments inspired by silver Mylar rescue blankets.
Perhaps it’s the looming possibility of another Cold War, or just the success of Hidden Figures, but everything about this show screamed 1960s NASA.
Chanel hairstylist Sam McKnight explained to Vogue that the inspiration for the glam was ’60s movie icon Barbarella, a ~sexy~ astronaut played by Jane Fonda whose mission is to stop an evil scientist from destroying the galaxy. In the film, Fonda’s hair is teased to the outer limits in a tall bouffant, a look replicated on the Chanel runway and topped off with a chic headband.
"The look was a nod to the ultimate space age icon," McKnight said. "Karl wanted a strong silhouette — the ’60s headbands and makeup demanded a big gravity-defying shape — so Chanelarella was born."
The makeup featured thick, chunky mascara — a la 1960s supermodel Twiggy — with a bright, silver shadow and a dark line drawn above the crease at the center of the upper lid. Lips were juicy and tinted, but complemented the overall look rather than stealing the show.
McKnight says the look can be toned down for everyday life, but we think you should go all out. What do you have to lose?
