If you’re going to mommy-shame Chrissy Teigen, John Legend says he wants half the blame
Though she gave birth to her beautiful baby girl Luna less than a month ago, Chrissy Teigen has already had to deal with an onslaught of mommy-shaming. When she decided to go out for dinner a week after giving birth, she was called a bad mom. When she spray-tanned around her breast pump outline, her followers warned her that there was going to be backlash.
In response to this latest form of criticism, Chrissy let everyone know that these comments have gotten to her in the past, but she’s not going to let that happen anymore. “[I]t happens for anything and everything,” Teigen tweeted. “[I] have decided to stop worrying!”
However, that wasn’t good enough for husband John Legend. Considering that Luna has two parents, it doesn’t make sense that only one of them is on the receiving end of a ton of shame. Legend realizes this and has decided to speak out: “Funny there’s no dad-shaming. When both of us go out to dinner, shame both of us so Chrissy doesn’t have to take it all. We’ll split it.”
John makes a great point. Though Chrissy is a new mom who’s learning how to take on this role, she isn’t the only one who is responsible for Luna. With this in mind, it can be said that all the mommy-shaming Chrissy receives is inherently sexist. Why is it that dads often get a free pass when it comes to parenting criticism, yet moms are quickly labelled a “bad mom” when they do one thing someone else doesn’t agree with?
Taking care of another human being is hard enough. We shouldn’t be adding to that pressure by shaming only moms who are simply trying to do their best.
