Young adults are taking a stand for mental health, and it’s important
You’ve heard that laughter is the best medicine, and in the case of Project UROK, it is the medicine. The project, founded by CollegeHumor’s Jenny Jaffe, is working to eliminate the stigma around mental illness through honesty and comedy. Their website hosts first-person videos that tell the narrators’ stories about their respective mental illnesses. The videos are inspiring, designed to show how the narrator has managed to not just live, but live well with their illness.
Jenny struggles with OCD, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder and depression, and has since she was a child,. She always used comedy shows like Saturday Night Live to make it through the day:
Another member of the project, the vice president Sarah Hartshorne, was diagnosed with ADHD in college:
Celebrities have also gotten involved, including child star Mara Wilson, who now writes and performs in New York City:
She feels that using her position in the spotlight to educate her audience is a responsibility that every celebrity has. Laughter may be the best medicine, but the feeling you get when you know you’ve helped someone comes in close second.
