You Exist, Therefore You Create

A note to all snowflakes far and wide (that’s you) :

To be alive is to be creative.

I’ve heard one too many people say, “I don’t have a creative bone in my body!” or “My sister is the creative in the family.”

We are born unique and complex snowflakes that, over time, tend to let society’s labels and others’ opinions melt our creative confidence. Even in daily life when you’re thinking, imagining, problem-solving and conversing, you are being creative. Creativity doesn’t have to be something that hangs in a museum or tops the billboard charts. Look around you and within you; the “artist” and the “businessman” are just words. You are an energy, a life force waiting to be expressed.

My favorite quotes to remind myself and others of our innate ability to create:

There is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is; nor how valuable it is; nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. – Martha Graham, icon of Modern Dance

Creativity is the quality that you bring to the activity that you are doing. It is an attitude, an inner approach- how you look at things…Not everybody can be a painter – and there is no need also. If everybody is a painter the world will be very ugly; it will be difficult to live. And not everybody can be a dancer, and there is no need. But everybody can be creative… Whatsoever you do, if you do it joyfully, if you do it lovingly, if your act of doing it is not purely economical, then it is creative.” – Osho, Indian mystic, guru, and spiritual teacher

Practicing any art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow…Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something. – Kurt Vonnegut, American writer

And last but not least:

Don’t let anyone rob you of your imagination, your creativity, or your curiosity. It’s your place in the world; it’s your life. Go on and do all you can with it, and make it the life you want to live. – Mae Jemison, American physician and NASA astronaut
