There’s now a “Wrinkle in Time” challenge, and it wants you to pay it forward
Whenever there’s a blockbuster film hitting the multiplexes, there’s usually some sort of challenge that fans initiate to hype up the movie, or to celebrate its best moments once it’s out. Like, when Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrived on the big screen, a Kylo Ren challenge went viral, and people posted photos of themselves wearing ridiculously high pants just like the villain. Now that A Wrinkle in Time is about to tesser into theaters, a new challenge has been created. But instead of dressing up like Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, or Mrs. Which, fans are encouraged to give back, and it’s all sorts of wonderful.
The Roots’ drummer Questlove announced on Twitter that he’s helping to raise money for “Give a Child the Universe,” a Color of Change and AMC Theaters crowdfunding initiative that will give underprivileged kids the chance to see A Wrinkle in Time in theaters. He called it the #WRINKLEChallenge, and he started encouraging fellow celebrities like Oprah and Jemele Hill, along with his millions of followers to donate to the cause so that children all over the country get to watch the film.
"*breaking news* im startin the #WRINKLEchallenge --- because it's IMPORTANT that children see this film," he wrote on Twitter. "if you are able to donate ($10 bucks or $10 katrillion) please rise to the occasion. SUPER EASY! click here https://www.giveachildtheuniverse.com"
Director Ava DuVernay was, naturally, quick to approve!
"Using the donations, Color of Change will distribute tickets to a host of local partners, schools, and community-based organizations, allowing children to enjoy this highly anticipated film about empowerment and family on opening day," the official website states.
Like Black Panther — which also saw support from celebrities to help kids see it — A Wrinkle In Time is more than just a fantasy film. It’s an important film for diversity and representation, with women of color front and center. If you have $10 to spare, or maybe $10 katrillion, consider participating in the #WRINKLEchallenge, so children across the country can see women as heroes, too.
A Wrinkle in Time opens in theaters on March 9th.
