Patty Jenkins was surprised we all cried over this one “Wonder Woman” scene
There are so many powerful scenes in Wonder Woman, it’s hard to name a favorite. Or to identify which one made us cry the hardest, for that matter. Even director Patty Jenkins didn’t know how emotional some of the moments were going to be. Jenkins told us she was “obsessed” with the No Man’s Land scene. (Honestly, same.) She said she expected people to get emotional during that battle. After all, it is the moment when we meet Wonder Woman for the first time.
But there’s another scene in Wonder Woman that Jenkins didn’t expect us to get emotional over: The beach battle.
“I think the beach battle surprised me much more, Jenkins said during a recent press event.“I didn’t ever think it would be that way, and the fact that women had such a strong reaction to seeing themselves fight in that way, in that number, was more surprising to me.
The beach battle is the first big action sequence of the movie. It’s a fight between the Amazon warriors and the hostile German forces, who just accidentally invaded the island of Themyscira.
We agree with Jenkins that the beach battle took us by surprise.
It’s not your average fight sequence: It takes place on a bright sunny beach in broad daylight (as opposed to a bloody battlefield or in thick woods). The weapons are mismatched (guns and boats vs swords and horses). And the opponents are complete opposites (female Amazonian warriors vs buttoned-up military men).
But those differences are exactly what makes the moment so powerful.
In that moment, Diana realizes the evil that other people are capable of. The female warriors fight off the Germans with such incredible strength. And Antiope sacrifices herself to save Diana. Before we knew what hit us, we were sobbing.
“I was like, ‘Oh, wow. Yes, of course!’ Jenkins continued. “We were so involved in every step that we never could just step out and see it for the first time. But of course it’s surprising to see for the first time.
Just thinking about that beautiful scene makes us tear up. BRB, grabbing another box of tissues.
