Wonder Woman just got a slightly more practical outfit—at last

Whenever I see Wonder Woman fight crime in her strapless leotard thing I have SO MANY QUESTIONS. First, HOW does it stay up? She runs and lassos, and seems to have nary a slip-up or readjustment. Also, that belt is cinched SO tight, how does she breathe, aren’t you supposed to be able to breathe when you’re avenging evil? Lastly, all that metal on her corset, doesn’t that hurt? If I had that much metal near my boobs, I feel like I would get boob cuts ALL THE TIME.

See what I mean? SO MANY QUESTIONS.

In the newest issue of the Wonder Woman comic book series, some of my questions are actually being addressed, as Wonder Woman is getting an ever-so-slightly more practical-looking outfit. Behold!

As The Mary Sue reports, this June, Wonder Woman will debut her new outfit which has (gasp!) SLEEVES and (more gasp!) PANTS in issue 41.

This actually isn’t the first time WW got a makeover. In 2010, as the NY Times notes, an alternate history was written for issue 600 of her monthly comic. In this reimagining, Wonder Woman does not grow up on Paradise Island with the other Amazons, but rather is whisked away from the island as a baby while an unknown evil destroys the island and its inhabitants.

In this alternate origin story, Wonder Woman also gets sleeves and pants, check it!

As writer of this series Michael Straczynski explained, the “wardrobe issue” is one of the first things he wanted to deal with when he got the job:

“She’s been locked into pretty much the exact same outfit since her debut in 1941. If you’re going to make a statement about bringing Wonder Woman into the 21st century, you need to be bold and you need to make it visual. I wanted to toughen her up, and give her a modern sensibility…What woman only wears only one outfit for 60-plus years?”

Now, Wonder Woman gets to wear pants and sleeves not only in this alternate timeline, but in her main storyline as well. Congratulations, Wonder Woman, we hope you are SO much more comfortable fighting crime in your new threads!
