“Wonder Woman” may be banned in yet another country
We’ve already reported on how this summer’s smash hit Wonder Woman has been banned in Lebanon for political reasons, and it now looks like Wonder Woman may also get banned in Tunisia for a similar rational.
Apparently, the Tunisian Culture Minister has requested to ban the film after a request from one of the country’s political parties.
The request seems to be due to Gal Gadot’s public defense of Israel — her home country — during the 2014 Gaza War, and it came right before the preview screening of the movie in Tunisia’s capital city, Tunis, on June 7th. According to Deadline, the film is currently suspended from all screenings, though not technically banned — yet.
In case you missed it, the film has been banned in Lebanon because Israel and Lebanon are technically currently at war, and Lebanon has a ban on all Israeli exports (and they are deeming a movie with an Israeli lead actress under the “Israeli export” umbrella).
We know these are all extremely complicated issues, and we’re not going to try to attempt to solve them now. But we can’t help but feel like it’s a complete shame that anybody in this world is being deprived of seeing this particular film. Wonder Woman’s message of love, peace, and empowerment are pretty darn transcendental, and the lead actress’s nationality is truly irrelevant to the film’s plot or the character she plays.
