As if we weren’t already in love with “Wonder Woman,” the movie used real-life athletes as Amazonian warriors
The new Wonder Woman movie is *all* about girl power and now we’re learning just how much girl power went into making the film. The film, which is receiving a ton of critical acclaim, is proving that taking “risks” in having female directors like Patty Jenkins — who directed the stellar Wonder Woman —helm major projects is something all studios should be doing.
But Wonder Woman didn’t just hire badass woman behind the camera, the new DC superhero film was not messing around when it came to finding warriors — enlisting real-life athletes to play Amazonian warriors in the film, including American Crossfit champion, Brooke Ence, Swedish professional fighter, Madeleine Vall Beijner, and American boxer Ann Wolfe.
Not gonna lie, it’s amazing to see these talented ladies — who kick butt in everyday life — be totally badass onscreen.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly Beijner and Ence opened up about their time working on the film. In training in London to play an Amazon warrior, Ence revealed that it was incredible to see a sea of women training.
“It really is cool to see this whole training area, and there’s not one male figure in sight, she said. “It’s just women wrestling other women, kickboxing, doing pull-ups and practicing with spears — just a lot of stuff that in the real world is very male-dominated.
Beijner added that like many of the athletes, her training to not show any emotion in competition required a little adjustment on set. She revealed that her instinct to hide any emotion even garnered her a nickname on set.
“I’ve been training for 12 years not to show anything, even how hard I get hit," Beijner said. "They called me RoboCop because when we were training, they were like, ‘You’re supposed to show that it hurts!’ And I was like, ‘No, I don’t get hurt! I’m a fighter!’
Ence also revealed that putting on the costumes for the first time was incredibly empowering. She said, “The first day we were on-set with all of our swords and shields, it felt like a different type of power. And we looked awesome.”
We love that these real-life warriors got to show their stuff in the new Wonder Woman film. We seriously can’t wait to see them kick ass on screen!
