Ladies, we are officially more likely to have a college degree than men are
Are you a college student? Do you ever look around campus and feel like there are way more women than men? Well, it might not actually be your imagination. Some very exciting news has come out today from Time Magazine.
“For the first time since the Census Bureau began collecting data on higher education attainment, women are more likely to have a Bachelor’s degree than men.” Let me repeat: women are more likely to earn a Bachelor’s degree than men. More women have ’em, more women are getting ’em. How about these updated college stats as some great girl power news to end your week?
Let me break the stats down for you: when it comes to men and women between the ages of 25 and 34, 37.5% of women have at least a Bachelor’s, if not more advanced degrees. Among men, only 29.5% have attained their college degree. Each year the percentages of college attainment increase at about the same rate, but now, women have exceeded men in completing their degrees. These findings also show how younger generations are embracing equality of the sexes, as well as seeking out higher education much more than generations past.
For reference, among the 60 + crowd a good percentage more men have completed degrees than women. The Time article considers this difference, “But for the over-65 crowd, only 20.3% of women have such degrees, compared to 30.6% of men.” These are some interesting stats to think about; they certainly mark a major shift in higher education. Perhaps they also indicate a shift in societal views of who is pursuing a college degree and who should pursue one.
