This woman’s argument against victim blaming will shut anyone up
The queen of the day is Alice Brine, a stand-up comedian from New Zealand, whose viral Facebook status will effectively shut down any rape apologist who ever tries to blame the victim again.
Earlier this week, Brine posted a status that flipped the illogical victim blaming script by using it in another scenario:
“I’m gunna start going home with random very drunk guys and stealing all of their shit. Everything they own. It won’t be my fault though… they were drunk. They should have known better. I’ll get away with it 90% of the time but then when one brave man takes me to court over it, I’ll argue that I wasn’t sure if he meant it when he said ‘no don’t steal my Audi’.”
PERFECT,
Why does our society respect private property more than a woman’s right to bodily autonomy? Why would it be ridiculous for a criminal to defend herself with this logic in court, but rapists do it all the time?
The flawless status has moved thousands of people on the internet. As of right now, it has been shared 47,413 times and received 113,000 likes. And while Brine told Buzzfeed that the response has been overwhelmingly positive, as a vocal woman on the internet, she is still being subjected to rape threats.
But the comedian skewers the internet troll with humor, of course.
Still, Brine has received countless messages from folks expressing their gratitude for her words, and that’s what really matters.
Brine told Buzzfeed, “The word ‘no’ is not subjective. Consent is not difficult to understand… now [people] can just print out the screenshot [of the status] and carry it around if they need to prove their point to someone.”
For real, guys, print out a screenshot of her status because it will def come in handy.
