This woman turned unwanted online advances from men into beautiful illustrations
The world of online dating can be strange, wonderful, brilliant, bonkers, and bizarre. You never know what’s going to happen as you navigate a plethora of apps and websites, dodgy dates, and unwanted advances. The funniest things about online dating, however, are the pick up lines and advances.
In fact, one illustrator and Instagram user found them so ridiculous that she decided to turn them into actual works of art.
Emmie Tsumura is a Toronto-based illustrator, graphic designer, and strategist who, one day, realized that some of the pick up lines she was getting on apps like OkCupid, Tinder, and match.com were so out of control, wild, inappropriate, and misogynistic that she had to do something about it.
“I’m a curious person by nature, so feeling shocked, offended, or repulsed would be followed by something like intrigue or fascination,” she said to Buzzfeed about the time one man’s first message to her was simply that he wanted to have sex with her. “Who was this person and why did they send this and what should I do?! Part of me is saying, ‘Are you fucking kidding me?!’ Another part of me is feeling super sad and alone. Another part is saying, ‘This is hilarious!’”
After receiving a flurry of unsolicited dick pics and unwanted come ons, Tsumura decided that she’d turn the experience into something positive (YASS) and started to draws three of the guys who had messaged her.
In fact, the drawings actually ended up slowing down Tsumura’s online dating life. But, it had a positive impact elsewhere. “I’ve had lots of people say that seeing the illustrations made them feel understood,” she told Buzzfeed, “or less alone.”
Like many women (and gay and bisexual men, transgender women and men) on dating apps, unsolicited male attention has become commonplace. Unfortunately, a lot of the time these interactions can leave people feeling vulnerable, alone, abused, and uncomfortable. Tbh, it should be illegal to send an unsolicited picture of your penis to anyone.
After receiving loads of positive comments, Tsumura decided to launch an Instagram account, @ok_cucumber, to share her illustrations.
