This woman Instagrammed her IUD insertion for an important reason

There’s a great deal of uncertainty in the air lately, thanks to the political climate. Rights of all kinds are being questioned, including a woman’s right to choose. Fears about reproductive rights in the wake of Donald Trump’s victory led to a surge in IUD insertions. In an attempt to normalize the process of getting an one while simultaneously defending Planned Parenthood, one woman Instagrammed her IUD insertion.

The following Instagram Story is incredibly powerful.

28-year-old Whitney Bell created the above Instagram Story in the hopes of normalizing and educating people about many of the services Planned Parenthood actually provides. Too often, these every day issues are made to feel abnormal or taboo. And she believes that talking about these reproductive issues will improve the general cultural conversation.

Bell explained her thought process to Refinery29, saying, "As women we have been shamed and taught not to discuss our periods, abortion, birth control, or visiting Planned Parenthood in general. I want to remove the stigma, encourage us to talk more openly about these processes...we are all going through the same thing."

Planned Parenthood offers more than abortions.

They provide cancer screenings, mammograms, HIV/AIDs screenings, counseling, birth control, and sex education, to name just a few. Unfortunately, whenever we hear “Planned Parenthood,” we almost immediately think ONLY abortion. But the organization offers much more than that. We applaud people like Whitney who speak out in support. Knowledge is power.
