So this is the real reason why wizards in ‘Harry Potter’ still wear robes

You might have needed to wear a uniform for grades K-12, and students at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry had a uniform of their own. But, TBH, their dress code seems to be made for comfy and cozy, because who wouldn’t want to wear a snugly robe every day of the week? Answer: No one. However, have you ever stopped to think about why students are wearing robes? Doesn’t that seem like kind of an archaic wizard tradition?

Entering into the real wizard world (or, the real muggle world), the robe is no longer a requirement. Many wizards still wear them on a daily basis, like Mr. Weasley, but you don’t have to. So why is it that robes are a requirement for all incoming First Year students, and something they wear right up until the time they graduate? Why aren’t students allowed to dress down in jeans and T-shirts for Potions?

One Tumblr uses seems to have found a pretty good answer. Vondrakenhof stumbled across a quick passage in Order of the Phoenix, where Mad Eye Moody scolds Harry Potter for putting his wand in his back pocket — probably reminding you of all the times your mom has scolded you for putting your phone in your back pocket. Could this be the reason Hogwarts requires students to wear robes? With front pockets on the robes, even if a wand were to accidentally ignite it’d probably only cast a spell on the floor, at worst the side of your foot. Can you just imagine Madam Pomfrey complaining SO MUCH about all the First Years accidentally setting their tushes on fire?
