In more amazing sequel news, Winona Ryder promises ‘Beetlejuice 2’ is a thing
It looks like Beetlejuice isn’t going to have to wait in the afterlife reception area much longer! A sequel to the original film (which was released all the way back in 1988) had always been discussed, and Tim Burton had previously expressed interest in returning to direct a follow-up film. In December of last year, Burton said a sequel was “closer than ever” (provided Michael Keaton is able to make a return appearance) – and now, according to co-star Winona Ryder, the dream is still in the works.
In an interview with HuffPost Live from the Sundance Film Festival, Ryder confirmed that there’s still a lot of potential for the film to emerge at some point in the future. “As far as I know, it’s gonna happen,” she said. She wasn’t able to offer up any further info or a timeline of when we can expect the film to drop, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed for sooner rather than later.
Love that Lydia Deetz for spilling the secret.
She actually hinted at a sequel back in a 2013 interview with The Daily Beast.
“I’m kind of sworn to secrecy,” Ryder said. “But it sounds like it might be happening.” According to that interview, the follow-up film would catch up with the cast after almost three decades. “It’s not a remake,” Ryder said. “It’s 27 years later. And I have to say, I love Lydia so much. She was such a huge part of me. I would be really interested in what she is doing 27 years later.”
We second that! Note to filmmakers: please have her do this one more time. . .
