Lorelai owned her dream inn, and for 200 perfect words you could too
Your biggest Gilmore Girls‘ fantasy is about to come true. No, not the fantasy about your wedding to Dean, we’re talking about the one where you own a historic New England bed and breakfast, a la Lorelai and Sookie. Well, good news: The Center Lovell Inn & Restaurant in Maine is looking for a new Lorelai Gilmore, and it could be you! All you have to do is write a 200-word essay, and make your 200-word essay better than everyone else’s 200-word essay. Easy peasy, right?
Let’s back up. In 1993, a woman named Janice Sage won an essay contest. Her prize? The Center Lovell Inn. That’s right — she won a bed and breakfast through an essay contest, and has been running it ever since. Fast forward to today: Janice is retiring and has decided to continue the tradition of finding the Inn’s next owner via essay contest. She’s charging $125 per contest entry, hoping to reach the $900,000 estimated value of the property. For those of you playing along at home, that’s 7,200 entrants.
If you win you’ll own a historic New England inn, without having to pay the money it costs to buy a historic New England inn. Now, if you want to be the Center Lovell Inn’s next owner, pen a 200-word essay explaining why you should own and operate the Inn. Mail it to Janice with your $125 check or money order, and you’re officially in the running. Entries are being accepted until May 7th!
FYI, per the contest details, the winner must operate the building as an inn for at least a year.
Sounds kind of amazing, doesn’t it? According to the Inn’s website, it’s located three and a half hours from Boston, and just over an hour from Portland. It has beautiful mountain views and is across the street from Kezar Lake, where you can swim, fish, lounge on the beach or rent boats and canoes.
For all you writers out there, this seems like a dream retreat. That is, if you don’t mind running an inn while you write the great American novel.
