Will and Kate just recreated this classic Princess Diana photo
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been in India all week on an official royal visit, and we’ve been keeping up with their entire trip from afar, swooning over Kate’s colorful dresses and vicariously living all their (many) adventures. Seriously, the images are enough to make Instagram itself jealous.
One photograph in particular though, has completely stolen our hearts. Earlier today, Kensington Palace released a breathtaking photo of the Duke and Duchess sitting on a bench in front of the Taj Mahal. The photo itself would be beautiful all on its own, but the meaning behind it is especially poignant.
In 1992, Prince William’s mother, Princess Diana, posed for a picture on the very same bench in the very same spot. As soon as the photo was taken, it became an iconic symbol of the breakdown of Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles. They separated shortly afterward, and the photo of Diana, while gorgeous, has a definite bittersweet air of sadness about it.
A spokesperson for the royal family said the Duke and Duchess recreated the photo because they wanted “to create some new memories.” He said, “The Duke of Cambridge is of course aware of the huge esteem his mother, the late Princess of Wales, is held in in India and he appreciates the status of the images that exist of the Princess at the Taj. He feels incredibly lucky to visit a place where his mother’s memory is kept alive by so many who travel there.”
Wow. Just wow. Looking at this gives us so many feels.
We love the way Prince William continually honors the memory of his late mother. We’ll always remember Diana. Seeing Kate wear her sapphire ring and watching them follow in Diana’s footsteps at the Taj Mahal do indeed create new, happy memories of her legacy. Well done, Prince William. Well done.
