No giggles here: That Will Ferrell/Kristen Wiig Lifetime movie ain’t gonna happen

A few days ago (April 1st, to be exact) word got out that Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig had teamed together for a new movie. This just wasn’t any movie, though, but a Lifetime original movie. You know, the ones you get completely sucked into on a Saturday afternoon, and before you realize it twelve hours have passed? That kind of movie.

Lifetime is celebrating 25 years of original movies, and this Ferrell/Wiig venture was going to be like their capstone. A Deadly Adoption is a thriller about a couple who takes in a pregnant woman with the hopes of adopting her unborn baby. It was going to be totally serious — like all Lifetime movies — but at the same time totally campy. Basically, everything we could ever hope for in a Lifetime movie.

Up until April 1st, this had been a top secret project. Considering it started making the news rounds on April 1st, many figured it was a pretty good April Fool’s joke. The Hollywood Reporter claimed that it had already wrapped production, with an air date later this summer. The news outlet also mentioned that, Ferrell “is a huge fan of the Lifetime movies and always has wanted to make one himself.” Doesn’t this sound too good to be true?

Well, it might be. Less than A DAY after this news got out, Entertainment Weekly reported that the project had been, “scrapped.” Ferrell told EW that, “We are deeply disappointed that our planned top secret project was made public. Kristen and I have decided it is in the best interest for everyone to forego the project entirely, and we thank Lifetime and all the people who were ready to help us make this film.”

What??

So the movie was a secret, it leaked, and now it’s gone. But the movie’s already done! It would be such a shame to see a movie that so much hard work was put into — and one that we desperately want to see — be completely shelved indefinitely. This chain of events also raises the question as to if it was even real or not to begin with. I want to believe it was real. But… was it? Was it just an April Fool’s prank that got us all excited? Is A Deadly Adoption really out there somewhere? Also is Ferrell really the one in charge of Lifetime programming? Is he even allowed to make the call to scrap it??

This whole thing is strangely suspicious and leaves me with a lot of Lifetime feelings. Bottom line: This movie sounds amazing and a perfect homage to the Lifetime genre. But, is it even real in the first place? Does this movie even exist? THE GOOD PEOPLE NEED ANSWERS. I’m completely willing to dedicate an entire Saturday night to a viewing of A Deadly Adoption, if it’s real, and if it should ever air.

So, pleeeeaaaase?
