Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig will star in a musical about musicals

Here’s something you don’t learn in history class: From the 1950s to the 1980s, American corporations commissioned Broadway actors to perform in “industrial musicals,” shows that were seen only by company employees and stakeholders, and were meant to motivate staff and improve sales. And lucky for all of us, Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig will soon star in a musical about these musicals — and we seriously cannot wait.

These perfectly kitschy shows featured original music and lyrics, and showcased new products and ways to interact with customers to lift sales. They were performed behind company doors only, and featured songs about appliances, soda, clothing, and so much more.

While we don’t yet know much about the roles Ferrell and Wiig will play in the film, we feel pretty confident that the two comedians — both Saturday Night Live alums — will bring a hilarious edge to the story. Though it’s true that their last project together was a strangely earnest Lifetime movie called A Deadly Adoption, about an adoption gone wrong, we suspect that songs about cars and dishwashers will make for pretty joke-worthy material.

We do know, thanks to Deadline, that the movie will be built around a non-fiction book by Steve Young and Sport Murphy called Everything Is Coming Up Profits: The Golden Age Of Industrial Musicals. So we can count on the film being historically accurate.

An entire movie musical —à la La La Land — that’s sure to be freaking hilarious? We’ll take it, Hollywood!
