Here’s why we’re really getting more ‘Heroes’

Save the cheerleader, save the world. It’s basically my mantra.

The Heroes series has been through a lot. First, there were the four original seasons on NBC. Then, there was Heroes Evolutions, the online series. Now this fall, it will be back on NBC with Heroes Reborn, a 13-episode miniseries.

Through the years, alliances shifted and plot lines changed (remember the Company?). But the individual stories of the characters and how they weave together have always been the main focus of the show. So, how did this reboot of sorts come about?

“The truth is when we went off the air, we didn’t know we were going off the air, so we left at an absolutely fantastic moment that set everything into motion for what we’re doing here,” Heroes creator Tim Kring told reporters at the Television Critics Assn. press tour on Thursday.

Indeed, one of the best parts about the show is its star-studded cast. Heroes: Reborn will be a mix of old and new characters. Returning is Jack Coleman (H.R.G.), Masi Oka (Hiro), Sendhil Ramamurthy (Mohinder), Jimmy Jean-Louis (the Haitian) and Christine Rose (Angela Petrelli). New faces to the franchise include Ryan Guzman, Robbie Kay, Danika Yarosh, Judith Shekoni, Kiki Sukezane, Henry Zebrowski and Gatlin Green.

“It was almost an obligatory sort of hand-off, you know, baton pass to where we needed to go from there,” Kring continued. “And because we didn’t get to have that fifth season, I did always have that in my mind, that there was an unfinished nature to all of this.”

And now for a spoiler, if you haven’t seen the first four seasons. Heroes: Reborn begins in real time, five years after Claire revealed the existence of people with special abilities. So time has been passing in the Heroes world, too — something that will make watching the season especially entertaining.

“This world has become a very different place,” says Kring of the miniseries. “There’s something really great about this: This is not the fifth season, this is actually the 10th season, as if there were seasons in-between. I had always wanted to tell the story of when the world discovers these people.”

We’ve been big Heroes fans since day one, and can’t wait to see what this new series has in store!
