Why are people so obsessed with Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez’s Instagram fight?
Once again, a celebrity feud explodes on a Sunday night leaving us totally distracted at work on Monday morning. This time it was Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez who had us choosing sides across social media with the tag #SelenaEndingJustinParty. It all started when Justin, dashing our hopes for a Jelena reunion, posted a series of photos with his alleged new lady Sofia Richie on Instagram all weekend. Fans who have been bielebing in a Justin-Selena comeback took to commenting on the photos, bashing the youngest Richie.
In defense of bae, Justin threatened to make his account private if the trolls didn’t quit. And then, the internet exploded as Selena herself jumped in, telling Justin to check himself, that his fans love him. Selena wrote, “If you can’t handle the hate then stop posting pictures of your girlfriend lol – it should be special between you two only. Don’t be mad at your fans. They love you.”
But, why’d the internet shift its attention to the weird fight between two former flames? And who are these people sifting through the many comments on Justin’s Instagram to find Gomez’s wisdom?
Well, this is a perfect example of the gratitude we feel when celebrities show their human colors.
Breakups are hard as hell. We can pretend that we all haven’t been Selena, trolling a former flame’s feed or posting pictures of how happy we are without them. But we’re all Selena. Except she was far more eloquent than some in her tactful version of STFU on Justin’s photo and well timed series of fan photos showing her love for her crew. And yet, we’re Justin too–coming to the defense of our newest squeeze, when our parents and BFFs (and millions of followers) prefer our ex. We should all be able to freely flaunt our love without suffering the comments of our built-in relationship gurus otherwise known as followers. When they do, we’re going to come to their defense, threatening to weed out anyone disagreeing with our choice or simply labeling them as jealous.
All the #SelenaEndingJustinParty tells us is this: Jelena–they’re just like us.
