We may be able to order birth control straight from our phones in the very near future

Some of us are uncomfortable seeing doctors to obtain prescriptions for birth control. For others, it’s hard to take that time out of our busy schedules to make or go to appointments. For others still, transportation is unreliable, or it can be hard to find babysitters or take time away from other obligations. For these people, a new option is slowly becoming available, and this option will allow us to order birth control straight from our phones.

App-based options for birth control prescriptions are becoming steadily more popular, and we can only guess that more are in development at this very moment. There are currently six on the market right now, according to The New York Times, and most charge the same as a regular copay for a doctor’s visit — like Lemonaid, an app that charges $15 for a doctor to review medical information remotely via the app before sending a prescription to a pharmacy.

Then, there’s the Planned Parenthood app, which also offers video consultations with doctors over the phone for UTIs. These apps are all slightly different, but they all work with doctors to review patient information and then offer prescriptions remotely without the inconvenience (and uncomfortability) of making an appointment, and that seems to be a step in the right direction.

When women have better access to the things they need without having to jump through hoops to get quality care, they’re only more likely to take care of themselves.
