Who is Awkwafina, the rapper featured in the “Ocean’s 8” trailer?

The official Ocean’s 8 trailer was released today, and in addition to pumping viewers up for June 8th, 2018 (the film’s release date, of course), it also had many people wondering: Who is Awkwafina, the charismatic Asian-American actress who appears alongside the film’s more recognizable stars, like Sandra Bullock and Mindy Kaling? Turns out she’s not only a Chinese-Korean-American rapper, but she’s a hilarious comedian, too.

Born Nora Lum, Awkwafina grew up in Queens, New York, where she studied music at the renowned Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School for the performing arts. She also has a journalism degree, meaning her writing prowess extends far beyond her witty rhymes.

She first made a name for herself in 2012 when her comedy rap track, “My Vag” went viral.

Awkwafina then joined the cast of MTV’s Girl Code, becoming a host for the series’ spin-off talk-show, Girl Code Live. She made her big-screen debut in 2016 in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, and the rest, as they say, is history. Now, the actress and rapper is starring alongside A-list actresses like Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, and Rihanna in Ocean’s 8.

It’s safe to say this is just the start of a promising career for the multi-talented performer, and here are five other things to know about her:

1She’s hilarious.

2 She has a lot of famous friends, including Chloë Grace Moretz and Josh Hutcherson.

3 She wrote a super cool travel book.

4 She knows how to play the trumpet.
