This video of a white woman blocking a black man from entering his own apartment building is appalling
In yet another instance of a person of color getting unfairly targeted and harassed for simply living their lives, a black Missouri man was literally blocked from his own apartment building by a white fellow resident who refused to believe he also lived there.
In a now-viral video taken by D’Arreion Toles and posted on Friday, October 12th, we see him try to enter his apartment building, when a white woman blocks the entryway. The woman insists that Toles tell her which unit he lives in before she’ll move out of his way. He politely refuses, and squeezes passed her. It was at this point that the woman followed Toles into the elevator and ordered that he tell her which resident he was “visiting” (at which point he again calmly told her that he lived in the building).
The woman proceeded to follow him down the hall, all the way to his front door. It’s not until Toles opened the door with his key that she seemed to realize she had made a mistake. She then poorly attempted to backtrack by introducing herself as his neighbor.
Toles caught the entire incident on video.
According the HuffPost, the woman’s employer, Tribeca Luxury Apartments, released the following statement on Sunday, October 14th, revealing that she had been terminated from her position.
"The Tribeca-STL family is a minority-owned company that consists of employees and residents from many racial backgrounds. We are proud of this fact and do not and never will stand for racism or racial profiling at our company. After a review of the matter the employee has been terminated and is no longer with our company.
Despite this egregious example of blatant racial profiling, Toles says he’s not mad, and would even be willing to sit down and have a face-to-face conversation with the woman. Incidents like this happen all too often across America, and we’re thanking Toles for shining this small but critical light on what countless people of color face every single day.
