When Stars Stand Up: Thank You, CRJ!

Do you remember where you were when you first heard the song “Call Me Maybe?” You were probably like, what the heck is this song, it’s ridiculous! but by the end, you were probably dancing like it was your job, mouthing along to the words, and holding up a banana like a phone.

I mean, if you are me, which you probably are.

Carly Rae Jepsen phoned her way into our hearts a little bit ago, but is it not the best feeling in the world when someone we decide that we all love actually proves herself to be worthy of that love? Jepsen, or CRJ, as I call her, is actually an incredibly talented young pop star, and as luck would have it, a passionate young woman.

This summer, the National Scouting Jamboree takes place in West Virginia (its new permanent home) in July. The event is held once every four years, and is billed as a time for 50,000 Boy Scouts and affiliates to have fun outdoors, learning new skills, taking part in various activities, and enjoying performances and entertainment. Jepsen was one of two major headliners slated to perform at the Jamboree, the other is the band Train. Train claims that they will pull out of the event if the Boy Scouts do not overturn their ban on homosexual Scouts before July.

For those who are unaware, the Boy Scouts of America presently do not allow openly homosexual boys to participate in their organization. The official policy reads, “While the B.S.A. does not proactively inquire about the sexual orientation of employees, volunteers or members, we do not grant membership to individuals who are open or avowed homosexuals or who engage in behavior that would become a distraction to the mission of the B.S.A.”

Jepsen, after being urged by thousands of petitions signed by her fans, backed out of the concert. The Boy Scouts of America, are supposedly considering overturning their policy. Their official decision will be announced in May. Jepsen publicly supported her decision by claiming that she could not participate in an event created by any group with an anti-gay agenda.

Jepsen, I thank you for standing by your beliefs, and I wholly encourage the other organizations supporting the BSA to do the same.

For the record, the Girl Scouts of the USA openly support homosexuality, and even allow girls to substitute the word “god” in their pledge if a girl feels so inclined. You go, Girls.
