WhatsApp has announced a HUGE change and it *could* get very annoying

WhatsApp has announced a HUGE change and we’re not sure we’re okay with it, tbh.

The social messaging app, which was bought by Facebook for $19 billion in 2014, is one of the primary ways in which people communicate now. Like the phrase “google it,” whatsapp has become part of modern day vernacular.

However, now WhatsApp have announced a change to their group chat function which is sure to annoying a bucket load of people.

We know that we’ve totally been added to a group chat convo that we’re not 100% sure that we want to be part of, or one that gets a message every 10 seconds all day and all night.

Previously you used to be able to mute the chats that might be getting on your nerves without the rudeness of having everyone in the group informed that you’d left the chat.

WhatsApp have now announced that you can tag specific people, making it completely impossible to ignore when you’re being hassled in a group chat.

The function, which is now available on both iOS and Android versions of the app, is part of WhatsApp’s focus on group messaging. Like on Twitter and Instagram, you’ll be able to “@” someone whose attention you want, and the app will bypass any muted chats that might be going on.

Earlier this year, the app allowed users to increase the number of users in a group chat from 100 to 256. As The Independent reports, this could be an attempt for the app to infiltrate the office market, which is currently monopolized by clients like Slack. Similarly, document sharing was also introduced.

Likewise, in June WhatsApp announced that users in a group chat would now be able to quote the specific message that they were responding to.

Okay, so parts of this *could* be quite useful. Yes it’ll be annoying to have people be able to send you a notification when you’ve muted them, but say you’re still active in the chat it could be good to keep up with messages that you’ve missed.

We’re probably going to need some time to get used to this change, but we’re sure before too long something else will be different for us to freak out about.
