Taika Waititi’s “What We Do in the Shadows” will soon be a series, and what a time to be alive
What We Do in the Shadows was a 2014 mockumentary film that followed the everyday lives of four regular guys — Viago, Vladislav, Deacon, and Petyr — as they lived out their regular lives in Wellington, New Zealand. Oh, and those four guys also happened to be vampires, too. NBD, right? Right!
The movie was written and directed by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement (who also starred in the film). It was quite the cult classic with a pretty rabid following, so it’s not a surprise that FX just announced a pilot production commitment for a What We Do in the Shadows series, but we’re so excited nonetheless.
Unlike the film, the FX series will apparently be set in the United States, according to Fandango. And while Clement and Waititi won’t be starring in the new series as far as we know, Variety reports they’re both on board as executive producers. Clement is also listed as a writer, while Waititi is listed as the director.
Apart from that, however, we really don’t know what to expect from the series (except that it’s got to be awesome, right??). FX is keeping the details under lock and key, so we’ll just have to wait for more information on the series to get a better sense of what’s going on and how it ties into the film’s story (if it does at all).
Additionally, this isn’t the only What We Do in the Shadows spinoff that we can expect.
Variety added that Waititi and Clement are working on a spinoff film that follows the werewolves featured in the movie called, quite simply and hilariously, We’re Wolves. Additionally, they’re working on a spinoff series called Wellington Paranormal that follows police officers Karen and Brian, who are briefly seen in What We Do in the Shadows.

Coming off Taika Waititi’s success as director of Thor: Ragnorak and the announcement of Jemaine Clement’s return to Flight of the Conchords with an HBO special, this is a great time for the two to reinvigorate one of their most well-loved projects. We’re so excited to see what’s in store for us with the FX series, and as long as Waititi and Clement are on board (even behind the scenes) we know it’s going to be hilarious.
