Just a super-hilarious video showing what Tinder would have looked like in the ’80s

There are a lot of advantages to living in the modern world — technology is obviously at the very top of that list. Things like our smartphones and the apps on them make it easy to do everything from download music to order takeout, all with the push of a visually pleasing little button.

If we’re being honest with ourselves, it’s pretty tough to remember a time without all those little luxuries (wait, like people actually called their local Chinese restaurant on the phone? They met dates IRL?) Now: in your mind go back to the pre-Internet days, and imagine what signing up for a dating service would have been like without your smartphone.

That’s where the people behind the YouTube account SquirrelMonkeyCom come in. They pride themselves on making “funny, nerdy, retro videos” — that’s a direct quote — and they’re responsible for re-imagining what it would be like if all of the handy apps we’ve come to know and love originated back in the ’80s.

In their latest video, “Tinder in the 1980s,” the SquirrelMonkeyCom team created a hilarious tribute to the ads of the ’80s while delving into what it might look like if Tinder actually came to be back in that decade — they hit on all the right stuff.

No ’80s video is complete without the muffled voiceover (thanks to low audio quality) — and they even remembered to recreate those static lines that used to run across all of our VHS tapes! It totally brought us back to the technology we used to know and love, which is more than a little outdated — who else remembers having to insert a floppy disk any time you wanted to install a program?

This version of Tinder doesn’t involve swiping left or right to choose from your matches, but actually using keyboard shortcuts via Windows once you’ve installed the software on your computer. And when you manage to strike a match, there’s some pretty great theme music that plays.
