We’re obsessed with Michelle Obama’s relaxed White House dress code
First Lady Michelle Obama had some wise words for a White House guest whose feet were sore from being stuffed all night into high heels: take your shoes off!
That’s right, FLOTUS — herself a famed lover of comfortable kicks — told Spanx founder Sara Blakely that she was more than welcome to kick off her heels when Blakely complained of aching feet at a White House event.
Blakely shared the anecdote in an interview with Footwear News at Variety‘s Power of Women event in Los Angeles this weekend, saying,
"I stood in line at an event, and they allowed us to get a one-on-one photo with Michelle Obama. I waited in the line so long that by the time I finally got up to Michelle Obama, I literally burst out, 'My feet are killing me,' and she goes, 'Girl, my feet are killing me, too.' I asked if I can take my shoes off and she said, 'Yes, and you can tell anyone who tells you to put them back on that Mrs. Obama said you can take them off.'"
Blakely added, “The first lady and I bonded over sore feet.”
We’d say that’s a pretty perfect bonding experience!
FLOTUS has had a hand in relaxing other (somewhat uptight) policies at the White House. Last year, for example, she announced on Twitter that the White House’s ban on photos and social media had been lifted for the first time in 40 years.
Big news! Excited to announce we're lifting the ban on cameras and photos on public tours at the @WhiteHouse!https://t.co/b0v17puClm

It’s safe to say we’ll be missing her presence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue next year, no matter who wins the election!
