We’re cracking up over this Colbert sketch about a “Young Pope” spin-off

We totally can’t wait for the upcoming HBO series The Young Pope — but, we still find it funny when people poke a little bit of fun at it. During last night’s opening, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert parodied what it’d look like for HBO execs to think of a spin-off of The Young Pope — since, let’s face it — HBO shows usually end up being big hits.

The 10-episode series is set to hit this weekend, on January 15th, and it’s already getting rave reviews. Jude Law stars as the pope in question — Lenny Belardo, the first American pope in (fictional) history.

Hey — we’d see “Baby Pope” in a heartbeat. “Conceiving The Pope” might take it all a bit too far, though. (Even though the line of “Let’s make a pope” got some genuine LOLs out of us.)

Of course, there’s a bit of social commentary in there too — hopefully someday our active pope will be of a different ethnicity than usual.

As he’s currently a 44-year-old, Esquire made sure to point out that technically, Jude Law isn’t really the youngest “pope” in history.

In fact, St. Peter, who reportedly took the job 1,987 years ago to serve as the first pope ever, had him beat from day one. St. Peter was only 32 at the time.

Since then, well over 50 popes have clocked in at being younger than 44 — some, even younger than 32. In fact, it’s rumored that Pope Benedict IX might have been eleven when he served. It may be useless trivia to know, but it’s definitely a fun fact.
