We’ll Miss You, Shirley Temple

Shirley Temple is the most popular child star of all time, an American treasure known around the world by young and old. Who could forget Shirley’s adorable smile, her plentiful ringlets or her sweet and lively rendition of ‘Animal Crackers In My Soup’? Regardless of how many of her over 60 films you’ve seen, I think we can all agree that Shirley Temple is an absolute legend.

The world said goodbye to Temple on Monday, when she passed away at her home in California at the age of 85. Though no cause of death was given, it’s fair to say that in life, Shirley brought joy to all who encountered her and her work. And while she may no longer be with us, we are lucky to have her films to go back to and enjoy time and time again.

Beginning her career in 1934 at the age of 6, she completed over 40 films by the age of 12 and single-handedly saved what is now 20th Century Fox from sure bankruptcy. She was a delight both on and off set, with an incredible ability to memorize near entire scripts and fill in the blanks for her fellow actors when they inevitably forgot a line.

There is much to remember about Shirley and her contribution to American film, and I encourage everyone to share your memories of the actress and her films in the comments below. Also, now’s the time to revisit some of your favorite Shirley films – and there are plenty to choose from.

Rest in peace, Shirley Temple.
