Grumpy Cat Just Landed Another Dream Job
For a 2-year-old, Grumpy Cat, is doing pretty well for herself. She has inspired an explosively popular meme, appeared on numerous talk shows, met tons of eager celebrities who know all about her and posed for a bestselling book. To top it all off, now she’s getting her own Lifetime movie.
Titled Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever (but isn’t every Christmas bad when you’re Grumpy Cat?), the movie stars Tardar Sauce (her real name) as an orphan feline who is just too miserable to be adopted. That is, until she meets a special 12-year-old girl who can communicate with her. Yes Grumpy Cat has a speaking role. Don’t ask.
Lifetime favors dramas, so it seems unusual that the network would be interested in something featuring a comic meme. “We’re so known for our heartfelt sentimentality that it will poke fun at those stereotypes,” Arturo Interian, VP of original programming, told The Hollywood Reporter. And you know Grumpy Cat will be the one poking fun.
Tardar Sauce’s manager (yes, she’s got one of those) Ben Lashes has high hopes for the experience and believes his furry non-friend will be met with “the poshest trailer a cat has ever had on-set.”
So how did a cat born with a sour puss face get her own movie and Internet craze? It all started in Morristown, Arizona, where the population is just over 200. Among those residents is Tardar Sauce’s owner Tabatha Bundesen, whose brother posted a photo of the cat on Reddit two years ago. Tardar Sauce, who suffers from feline dwarfism and has an under bite, quickly became known as Grumpy Cat and Internet users took it upon themselves to imagine the horrible things she must be thinking about everyone around her:
With a perpetual look of discontent, one might think Tardar Sauce is unimpressed by life, but owner Tabatha has said she’s “actually really nice … I don’t think she has any enemies or rivals.” That’s probably not what the Internet wants to hear, but it’s good to know she’s not so morose after all. She’s also worth at least $1 million, and perhaps she’ll be even richer once the movie airs. But don’t expect her to smile about it.
