This one weird trick will free up a ton of space on your iPhone without deleting anything!

Few things are more frustrating than when you’re low on space on your iPhone. Constantly deleting your text messages and pictures in order to free up space is not only time consuming, it’s draining. I mean, choosing whether to delete that adorable dog pic or that inspiring quote is just not a decision you should have to make regularly.

While many people know that there are tons of ways to free up space like deleting stuff off the phone itself, NY Mag reported about one hack where you can create space without having to delete anything. It sounded too good to be true so we had to try it out.

First, you want to check just how much storage you have available.

If you’re one of the lucky ones who decided to upgrade to a ton of storage space, you likely won’t need (or even be able to use) this digital slight-of-hand. But if you’re like many people, you can use all the storage space help you can get.

Now, with your phone plugged into your computer, open iTunes and go to the movies section.

Pick any movie you want and click the green “Rent” box (don’t worry about the price since you won’t actually be renting the movie).

I chose Zootopia because it co-stars a sly fox who’s excellent at trickery and this whole process had me feeling the same way.

Note: If you’re really low on storage, it doesn’t matter what movie you choose since you definitely won’t have enough space for it. But if you’ve got a fair amount of storage, choose a really long and HD movie to guarantee it’ll be larger than what you have available.

After a moment of hope where it starts to download and you think “Hey, maybe I do have enough storage after all,” your phone will (understandably) remind you that you definitely don’t have enough space to watch Officer Judy Hobbs and Nick Wilde’s crazy antics from the palm of your hand.

But don’t let that get you down because now, if you go back to check your storage settings, you’ll see that somehow you’ve magically acquired more storage.

Voilà! You now have more storage space that wasn’t there before and you didn’t have to delete a thing.

We have no idea how or why it works, but it’s definitely exciting to see that it does. And even though you can’t watch Zootopia in its entirety from your phone, at least you can now take and send more adorable animal pictures to tide you over.
