The problem with brand name birth control: The monthly cost to be a woman

Being a Woman Ain’t Cheap! Yell it to the heavens and call up your law makers because it is absolutely true. In this series, we’ll talk to a different woman every month and ask her how much she spent that month trying to keep her vagina, uterus, and ovaries in check. Pregnancy tests, tampons, and gyno co-pays OH MY!

This month, meet a woman who is bleeding her bank account dry with brand name birth control because nobody told her they finally started making a generic of her go-to brand. ???????

What I spent this month on:

Tampons: $9.79 – I’m afraid of cardboard tampons and anything below super tampons is in my opinion, worthless. Is $9.79 too much to spend on Tampons? Maybe, but I like the big 36-count packs.

Panty Liners: $3.99 – Anybody on birth control will understand the horror that is “spotting.” Hate a pad, but panty-liners it is.

Coconut Oil: $5.99 – The internet told me that you can moisturize your va-jay-jay with coconut oil, so I did.

Bikini wax: $40 – I know this isn’t a necessity but I like doing it, so there’s that.

Ingrown hair serum: $27.50 – My wax girl said I have a problem with ingrown hairs and apparently an ingrown hair gone awry can KILL YOU! I could solve it by letting my down-there go au naturel, but I don’t want to do that, so instead I bought this overpriced ingrown hair serum that I don’t really think is working, tbh.

Birth control: $181.00 – So, the only birth control that doesn’t make me go crazy is Ortho Tri Cyclen-Lo, which is a brand name, and unfortunately, brand name birth control isn’t covered by my health insurance. I have been on this brand for years and always knew there wasn’t a generic version of it, UNTIL TODAY. Apparently they created a generic version of Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo in January and neither the pharmacy nor my doctor told me I could have switched over to the FREE version! #Smh

Advil: $3.99 – I’m a wimp and can’t get through the first day of my period without two Advil every six hours like clockwork.

Women’s pre-natal vitamins: $23.00 – I’m not trying to get pregnant but my gyno told me I needed to take vitamins and that pre-natal vitamins are best for all women at any stage of reproductive health. Also, I’m allergic to like, one thousand things, so I have to buy these stupid expensive vitamins that are free of all the allergens that my stomach can’t handle.

Grand Total:

And that, my lady friends, means, it ain’t cheap being a woman!
