Watercolor hair is the stunning new take on rainbow hair

Your next favorite colorful hair trend is here: watercolor hair.

Pravana is a professional hair color brand known for their wide array of colorful hair dye. The brand’s Artistic Color Director, Vadre Grigsby, wanted to mimic the soft, pastel look of traditional watercolor paintings, and as Seventeen reports, decided to take a slightly different approach to the rainbow hair trend. Using the hair as a canvas, hair dye as the paint, and Pravana’s Vivids Clear as the “water,” Grigsby approaches the hair like an actual painting. Vivids Clear is a clear gloss used to add shine to a client’s hair, but it can also be used to dilute a color.

The finished effect is similar to pastel rainbow hair, but this look has more of watery, transparent vibe — basically, pastel hair after a few washes, without losing the luster of the original color. The color of your hair beforehand will definitely affect the finished vibe. This look isn’t brunette-friendly, but if you already have very light hair, it’s going to look awesome. It’s also a fun way to experiment if you have grey or white hair, natural or not.

You can watch Grigsby’s tutorial here, but keep in mind, this was made for professional hairstylists. Bring it your next hair appointment to help your stylist transform your hair into a watercolor masterpiece.
