Watch the trailer for Studio Ghibli’s Amazon Prime TV series, and prepare to be amazed

We now have an incredible taster of the Studio Ghibli TV show and it looks completely magical.

It was announced late last year that Amazon Prime had picked up the English language version of the Studio Ghibli produced TV show, Ronja, The Robber’s Daughter, which originally aired in Japan in October 2014 to March 2015. What’s more, literal goddess Gillian Anderson was revealed to be the narrator of the series, which is based on the popular Scandinavian children’s book by Astrid Lindgren, who also authored the Pippi Longstocking series.

Well, now we’ve been given the first English trailer for Ronja, The Robber’s Daughter, and it looks absolutely stunning.

The 26-episode series was directed by Studio Ghibli’s Gorō Miyazaki ( Tales from Earthsea), the son of animator Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, and follows the story of two opposing familial clans of bandits set in a fantasy kingdom. The protagonist, the titular character of Ronja, was born on a stormy night and is one with the forrest. She later befriends a boy from the opposing tribe, Birk, and the pair of them have adventures among the magical creatures in the forrest, while the two clans attempt to figure out their differences.

"With Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter, Astrid Lindgren seems to be telling children to believe in their own power to grow, whilst telling adults to learn more from children," Gorō Miyazaki said in a statement. "Mutual respect will attain freedom in the true sense of the word."

While the series might look like the traditional animation of Studio Ghibli, it is in fact entirely a CGI, something that Ghibli-co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki has recently embraced in the production of what is thought to be his last film as an animator. The series was co-produced by with Polygon Pictures to create an authentic 2D graphic.

Speaking about their acquisition of the series, Tara Sorensen, head of kids programming at Amazon Studios, expressed her delight at being about to share the show with a wider audience.

"We're thrilled to be collaborating with Studio Ghibli on their first television series, excited to have the talented Gillian Anderson narrate, and proud to bring Astrid Lindgren's well-loved novel to life," she said. "We look forward to sharing this incredible story of love, family and friendship with our customers."

While fans are understandably excited about being able to see Ronja for the first time out of Japan, Amazon has announced that they won’t be streaming a version of the show in Japanese with English subtitles, as they have for some of their popular import cartoons.

However, we’re pretty sure that Studio Ghibli fans will still devour the series as it looks pretty darn special.

Ronja, The Robber’s Daughter begins streaming on Amazon Prime on January 27th.
