Watch 80 years of prom evolution in just 2 minutes

Prom is a sacred time of year for high school seniors. It’s a rite of passage. It’s the cause of elaborate planning (the dress, the shoes, the promposal) and the source of tons of criticism (see: any time a school unjustly bans a student from the event). The lovelies over at Teen Vogue just decided to take prom to a place you’d probably never guess though: history class.

Okay, well not exactly history class, but they did give the classic dance a blast from the past, creating a video that highlights 80 years’ worth of prom trends. The video shows how everything about prom — from the music and dancing, to the fashion and dance decor — has changed since the tradition became popular back in the 1930s. Check it out for yourself.

It’s interesting to see how much things have changed, but it’s been 80 years, so that’s definitely to be expected. What’s actually more interesting about the video is just how much prom has stayed the same and what a lasting and meaningful tradition it’s proven to be for so many people. Still, some of the clips have us wishing for a time machine, even if it’s just for the crazy fashion alone. Which decade would you love to have had the chance to attend prom in?
