Wait…So Wonder Woman might not be that queer after all?

It’s safe to say that we’re pretty excited about the upcoming Wonder Woman movie. We loved the tiny glimpse of the superhero in Batman v Superman, and just know that it’s going to be amazing to see a strong female superhero take on a lead role.

What made us even more excited was the news that Wonder Woman was completely sexually fluid.

In an interview with Comicosity, comic book writerGreg Rucka confirmed that he believed that Wonder Woman was queer in the sense that she’d had sexual and emotional relationships with both men and women on her utopian island Themyscira. Not only that, but Rucka’s comments made it sound like it was literally no big deal (amazing).

This news made us particularly excited. Not only would we be getting a female-lead superhero movie (FINALLY), but that woman’s sexuality was going to be fluid. Literally, a dream. What’s more, we were even more excited to learn that Wonder Woman was getting a female director, too! 

However, now it seems we may have to balance our expectations a little.

Speaking to Variety, Gal Godot, who is playing the titular character in the upcoming movie, said that there’s been no discussion about any same-sex relationships.

"It’s not something we’ve explored, she said. "It never came to the table, but when you talk theoretically about all the women on Themyscira and how many years she was there, then what [Rucka] said makes sense."

Okay, so Gal isn’t totally writing off the fact that Wonder Woman’s sexuality is fluid. However, she is saying that in this film we won’t get to see any of that.

Continuing, however, Gal did make really good point that we kinda agree with.

"But it’s not about that," she explained. "She’s a woman who loves people for who they are. She can be bisexual. She loves people for their hearts."

This is totally true. While it’s a real shame that there’s not going to be any representation in the upcoming movie, it doesn’t mean that part of the character is wiped out. It could be something we see more of in the future (fingers crossed).

Here’s hoping that Wonder Woman is a roaring success at the box office (it totally will be) and that in any follow-up films we get to see a more varied side to her.

Wonder Woman is set to hit theatres on June 2nd, 2017.
