Wait, Luke wasn’t originally supposed to be Lorelai’s love interest on “Gilmore Girls”
Prepare to have your minds blown, Gilmore Girls fans, because the greatest love story of our time was never actually meant to happen. That’s right, Luke wasn’t supposed to be Lorelai’s love interest! Are you dying right now? Because we are!
As Entertainment Weekly reports, Lauren Graham reveals in her new book, Talking as Fast as I Can, that Gilmore Girls series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino actually planned for (an unspecified) someone else to be Lorelai’s main squeeze, but Luke actor Scott Patterson was just too good at his job.
Writes Graham,
"Wow. Scott Patterson. You know, that part wasn’t necessarily the inevitable love interest for Lorelai that it became. He was simply Cute Grouchy Diner Owner in the beginning, and it could have gone in any number of directions, but Luke took on a more important role because of Scott’s special sexiness, which was mixed with a gruffness that was the perfect contrast to Lorelai’s chirpy cheerfulness."
We’ll take it!
Patterson’s “special sexiness” is totally undeniable, and he recently revealed that he had a crush on Graham while they were filming the original series — so it’s no wonder the two had chemistry!
Plus, as Patterson explained in a previous interview, he and Graham wanted Luke and Lorelai to get together much sooner than Season 4, but the writers knew what they were doing.
“If you have something that combustable, that incendiary, milk it, just drag it out as long as you can,” he said. “Because that’s the soul of drama. That kind of concentrated tension? You can stretch that out for a while, and she [Sherman-Palladino] did.”
Like we said — we’ll take it!
