Wait, we need to talk about that final scene on last night’s “Game of Thrones”

Last night’s episode of Game of Thrones was an emotional roller coaster (Sansa and Jon Snow reunite: yay; Ramsay murders Osha: boo), but what really threw us for a loop was that final scene — the one where Daenerys lights the Dothraki elite on fire and walks away unscathed. What? How? Why?

For those of us who haven’t read the books, the idea that Dany, the mother of fire-breathing dragons, could be immune to fire isn’t all that farfetched, but in the books, the Targaryens, including our Khaleesi, don’t have intrinsic fire resistance. Dany was able to invoke it one time earlier on, but that’s it.

In a 1998 interview unearthed by Vox, George R. R. Martin explains:

“The birth of Dany’s dragons was unique, magical, wonderous, a miracle. She is called The Unburnt because she walked into the flames and lived. But her brother sure as hell wasn’t immune to that molten gold.”

And when asked if it could happen again, Martin says, “Probably not.”

This creative decision on behalf of the show’s creators to ramp up the series’ element of fantasy and magic is BIG. We think this was just what Dany’s storyline needed to move things forward and can’t wait to see what happens next. (Is it Sunday yet?!)
