Did you catch these voice cameos in ‘The Force Awakens’?
Everyone is talking about the newest Stars Wars film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but no matter how much we talk about it, it seems there’s always something new to discover. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director J.J. Abrams and co-screenwriters Lawrence Kasdan and Michael Arndt spoke about the film, including a clever moment we might have missed.
In case it isn’t clear, there are certainly some spoilers ahead, so if you haven’t yet caught the film in theaters, you may want to stop reading now. Those who did wait in line for the highly anticipated film might remember a super important scene. When Rey discovers Luke Skywalker’s light saber, she has a flashback of hazy images. Over these images are voices, including some voices that we weren’t expecting to hear in this new film.
Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda’s words of wisdom could be heard, and J.J. Abrams confirmed that indeed both Ewan McGregor and Frank Oz reprised their iconic roles, even just through sound. With some clever editing, even the late Alec Guinness’ words made an appearance. It was all so quick and so confusing that movie-goers weren’t sure that’s actually what happened. This was on purpose. “The idea of the voices was, we wanted the audience to feel – but not necessarily be presented right in your face — this idea that familiar, Force-strong voices were connecting with her. At least as well as they could,” Abrams explained.
